Reds Spring Training News and Notes (Feb 19)
The Cincinnati Reds first official full squad workout is today…..and everyone showed up! Here is the biggest news and notes from spring training so far:
Hunter Greene is working on a curveball and a splitter as a way to change speeds and slow hitters down.
Emilio Pagan (groin surgery) and Sam Moll (shoulder) are the only pitchers expected to miss the first few games of Cactus League.
Noelvi Marte to miss first 5 Cactus League games from hamstring injury in Winter League, but feels “good.” Reds are being “deliberate” and monitoring his schedule.
Alex Young was also sidelined for a few days with back tightness.
India to Charlie Clifford of WLWT “I’m excited to play a little outfield, play some first (base), move around the diamond, I’ll be ready for sure.”
Levi Stout (recently claimed by the Seattle Mariners after the Reds DFA’d him) via Ryan Dovish of Seattle Times:
Stoudt believes the Mariners pitching philosophies and detailed player plans for success can help him get back to a level where he can stay at the MLB level. It was something he didn’t have with the Reds.
“It was different,” he said. “It was a little bit of I’d say lack of direction, in my sense. It was kind of not much of a philosophy. It was kind of just go play baseball and we’ll help you along the way.”
Stoudt loves the structure and the detailed player plans.
“That’s the most exciting thing for me is to get back to that process of them looking at me and saying, ‘all right, this is what we know and what can we do to make you the best version of yourself,’” he said. “In just talking to some guys today, there are new tools that weren’t here before that I’m excited to try out. I just really want to get to the best version of myself back again. I feel like I had it when I was here. I left and got off track a little bit. Now, I’m excited to get back on track.”
Derek Johnson on Antone “he is going to be a big part of our club if he stays healthy”.
No Opening Day Staring Pitcher set yet (Greene named March 9th last season).
Good progression so far in camp from Lodolo and Montas.
Rhett Lowder impressing everyone at camp.
